Police recovered the bodies of a university student and her mother from their home in Cumilla town early Monday (Sept 8).

The victims were identified as 23-year-old Sumaiya Akter Rinti, a third-year public administration student at Comilla University, and her mother, 52-year-old Tahmina Akter Fatema.

Their bodies were discovered on the second floor of a building near the Kaliarjuri playground.

House owner Anisul Islam Rana told reporters that Tahmina and her family had been living in the rented flat since the death of her husband, a local court official, last year.

He added that CCTV footage showed an unidentified man entering and leaving the residence during the day on Sunday.

Sumaiya’s elder brother, lawyer Tajul Islam Faisal, said he and his younger brother had returned home on Sunday evening and later found their mother and sister dead in separate rooms after repeated calls went unanswered. He alleged that the attackers also took mobile phones, a laptop, and gold jewellery from the house.

Kotwali police station chief Mohinul Islam confirmed the case was being treated as murder but said the cause of death would only be determined after autopsy reports were completed.

The investigation is ongoing.
