Independent candidate Abdur Rashid Zitu has been elected Vice President (VP) and Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Mazharul Islam General Secretary (GS) of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU), according to the final results announced on Saturday.
Voting for the JUCSU election began on Thursday at 9 am and concluded at 5 pm, but the manual vote-counting process took more than 40 hours before confirming Zitu as VP and Mazharul Islam as GS.
Abdur Rashid Zitu, a student of the Department of Comparative Literature and Culture (47th batch) and a resident of Al Beruni Hall, hails from Chandpur district. Previously active in the politics of Jahangirnagar University Chhatra League, he joined the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement as a coordinator during last year’s July movement and later continued under the banner of the “Mass Uprising Protection Movement.” Towards the end of the election campaign, widespread misinformation about him circulated on Facebook, including claims that the Awami League and the banned Chhatra League were campaigning in his favor. Despite this, Zitu remained confident of victory. After polls closed, he and his supporters, along with students from the Shibir-backed panel, protested at the Election Commission office against the delay in counting.
According to the final results, Ferdous Al Hasan was elected Assistant General Secretary (AGS), while Ayesha Siddika Meghla was elected Assistant General Secretary (Female). Abu Ubaida Usama became Education and Research Secretary, Safayet Mir was elected Environment and Nature Conservation Secretary, and Zahidul Islam Bappy secured the post of Literature and Publication Secretary. Sheikh Zisan Ahmed was elected Cultural Secretary, Raihan Uddin Assistant Cultural Secretary, and Ruhul Islam Drama Secretary.
Mahmudul Hasan Kiran, a national team footballer, was elected Sports Secretary, with Mahadi Hasan and Farhana Lubna chosen as Assistant Sports Secretaries for male and female respectively. Rashedul Emon Likhan became IT and Library Secretary, while Ahsan Labib was elected Social Service and Humanitarian Development Secretary, with Touhid Islam and Nigar Sultana serving as Assistant Secretaries in the same category. Husni Mubarak was elected Health and Food Security Secretary, and Tanvir Rahman secured the position of Transport and Communication Secretary. The elected executive members are Fabliha Jahan, Nabila Binte Harun, Nusrat Jahan Ima, Hafez Tariqul Islam, Abu Talha and Mohammad Ali Chishti.
