Nusrat Faria’s arrest embarrassing: Farooki

Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki said the arrest of actress Nusrat Faria as embarrassing.

He made the remark through a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday (May 19).

He said the interim government’s main task should be to bring the real culprits of the July incidents to justice.

Farooki said he usually avoids commenting outside his ministry work, but as someone from the industry, he felt the need to speak.

“Nusrat Faria’s arrest is an embarrassing event for us,” he said.

He said that government’s clear stance on broad cases is not to arrest anyone unless there is evidence in the initial investigation.

The Adviser said that the case against Faria has been ongoing for some time, and he was not aware of any plan to arrest her before the investigation was complete. The arrest happened after she arrived at the airport.

Farooki also suggested that fear following public anger over former Awami League president Abdul Hamid’s overseas trip might have influenced this incident. He referred to a similar recent case involving the wife of Barrister Andalib Partha. He said such incidents are not acceptable and expressed hope that these broad cases would be handled more carefully in the future.

He emphasized that the government’s priority remains prosecuting the real criminals of the July incidents.

On Sunday, Nusrat Faria was detained by immigration police at Shahjalal International Airport while traveling to Thailand. After questioning at the Detective Branch office, she was formally arrested in connection with an attempted murder case linked to an anti-discrimination movement filed at Bhatar Police Station. On Monday, the Dhallywood actress was sent to jail.
