A Dhaka court today (September 3) placed actor Siddiqur Rahman Siddique on a three-day remand in a case filed over the killing of furniture store employee Pervej Bepari during the July Mass Uprising.
The order was passed by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain after police produced Siddique before the court and petitioned for his remand.
Siddique, who was previously arrested in a separate case related to the attempted murder of a rickshaw-puller, has now been formally shown arrested in the murder case of Bepari.
According to case documents, Pervej Bepari, 23, had joined an anti-discrimination student rally in front of Subastu Tower under Gulshan Police Station on July 19, 2024.
The rally, held after Friday prayers, was violently disrupted, leaving Bepari critically injured by gunfire. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Siddique was named as the 223rd accused in the case filed by Bepari’s father, Md Sabuj. Investigators allege that Siddique played a role in orchestrating the violence and provided financial support to the attackers. Police have sought his remand to interrogate him further and identify other suspects involved in the incident.
Siddique was initially detained on April 29, 2025, when a group of youths apprehended him on Bailey Road, accusing him of political affiliations and handed him over to Ramna police.
He was later transferred to Gulshan Police Station and sent to jail following a seven-day remand in the earlier case.
The investigation into Bepari’s killing remains ongoing, with authorities aiming to uncover the broader network behind the July Uprising violence.
