Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79, her family has confirmed. The news was first reported by People magazine and later picked up by multiple media outlets including Reuters.
Keaton, who rose to prominence in the 1970s for her roles in The Godfather series, became a cultural icon with her performance in Annie Hall, for which she won the 1978 Academy Award for Best Actress.
Her long and varied career included leading roles in Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, and collaborations with Woody Allen such as Sleeper and Manhattan. She also directed films, including Hanging Up (2000).
In recent years she appeared in Summer Camp (2024), her final film, where she starred alongside Eugene Levy and Kathy Bates.
Tributes poured in from fellow actors and fans. Bette Midler called her “a complete original” and praised her authenticity and humor.
Keaton, who never married, is survived by her two adopted children, Dexter and Duke.
