Poet Shahid Qadri’s janaza after Zuhr prayers

DHAKA: The namaz-e-janaza of poet Shahid Qadri will be held at central mosque of Dhaka University (DU) after Zuhr prayers on Wednesday (August 31).

Later, he will be buried at Mirpur Martyred Intellectual Graveyard.

Earlier in the day, people from all walks of life paid their tribute to one of the major post 1947-poets of Bangla literature, Shahid Qadri, at Central Shaheed Minar in city.

His body was taken there around 11:15am.

Bangla Academy Shilpi Goshthi, Wrishij Shilpi Goshthi, Khelaghar, Udichi, Dainik Samakal, CPB, Chhayanaut, Patha Natak Parishad, Jatiya Kabita Parishad and many other organizations and individuals paid their tribute at the coffin of the poet here.

Besides, Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) chairman Dr Mohammad Sadiq, ruling Awami League joint general secretary Dipu Moni, cultural personality M Hamid, adviser to a former caretaker government Sultana Kamal, theatre personality Mamunur Rashid, poet Sufia Kamal’s son Sajid Kamal, principal information officer (PIO) of Press Information Department AKM Shamim Chowdhury, noted novelist Imdadul Haque Milon, and many other writers, journalists and well wishers paid their respect.

On behalf of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her military secretary Maj. Gen. Mia Mohammad Zainul Abedin and special assistant Mahbubul Huq Shakil paid respect to the poet.

The Sammilita Sangskritik Jote (SSJ) took the initiative to pay respect to the poet at the Shaheed Minar.

Poet’s son Adnan Qadri and his relatives were present here.

Earlier, the US-expatriate poet Shahid Qadri reached Dhaka on Wednesday morning (August 31).

A jet of Emirates Airlines, carrying the body, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 9:00am.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s special assistant Mahbubul Huq Shakil received the body at the airport.

Shahid Qadri breathed his last at Long Island’s North Shore University Hospital on Sunday morning (US time) at the age of 74.

He had been suffering from kidney diseases for a long and also caught pneumonia lately.

Qadri was admitted to the hospital on August 21 as his condition deteriorated.

He was awarded Bangla Academy Prize in 1973 and Ekushey Padak in 2011.

His famous books included Uttaradhikar (Inheritance), Tomake Obhibadon Priyatama (Salute to You, Dearest), Kothao Kono Krondon Nei (Weeping Nowhere) and Amar Chumbangullo Pouchhiye Dio (Please, Convey My Kisses).
