World Music Day celebrated

DHAKA: World Music Day or “ fete de La Musique” was celebrated Monday in the country as elsewhere around the glob with festivity and enthusiasm.

Marking the day, Alliance Française de Dhaka and chittagong arranged music concerts on their premises.

Alliance Francaise de Dhaka in collaboration with Alliance Francaise de Chittagong, the French Embassy and Channel i organized a concert that started at 3 pm and continued till 9 pm.

Teachers and students of School of Music, Alliance Française de Dhaka and popular bands-- The Bridge, De-Illumination and Warfaze-- performed in the concert.

Shaila Kabir, an audience said, ”It was an opportunity for me to get introduced with the music of well-known artists as well as amateurs.”

Alliance Francaise de Chittagong also arranged a three-day cultural programme from Monday to mark the day. Besides the students of the institution, popular French and Bangladeshi bands including Les Caribous Volants, Samageet, Nojibul and Shiblo, Alexandre Jurain and Shajahan Munsi performed in the musical shows.

“The objective of Alliance Francaise de Dhaka and Alliance Francaise de Chittagong is to make the world music day for Bangladeshi people. The event will be a popular and major cultural one in Bangladesh,” hoped Kazi Abdullah Al Muktadir, Programme officer of Alliance Francaise de Dhaka.

More than 120 countries and 350 cities across the globe celebrate this grand event every year on June 21, the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere.

In 1982, the French Ministry for Culture first celebrated the day in France. Later in 1985, on the occasion of European year of music, the World music Day became international.
