Trump to abandon Ukraine peace talks if no progress made

Donald Trump has warned that the United States will step away from facilitating peace talks between Russia and Ukraine if significant progress is not made soon.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump emphasized that while he wasn't expecting a resolution in a "specific number of days," he aimed to see a conclusion reached "quickly."

Trump's statement follows a similar warning from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stressed that the US would cease its involvement in the peace process if no tangible advancements were achieved within a matter of days.

Rubio remarked that Washington could not afford to remain engaged in the negotiations indefinitely, given its other priorities.

The situation in Ukraine remains dire, with continued Russian strikes leading to fatalities and injuries. As the war grinds on, Trump’s remarks highlight the growing impatience with the pace of diplomatic efforts.

President Vladimir Putin has laid out several conditions for any potential ceasefire, complicating efforts for a breakthrough.

Despite initial optimism from the Trump administration about quickly brokering a peace deal, discussions have faltered, with both sides blamed for the lack of progress.

Trump’s direct approach with Russian President Putin and his criticisms of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have raised concerns among NATO allies, who emphasize continued support for Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the difficulty of the negotiations, affirming Russia’s desire to reach a peace agreement that secures its interests while remaining open to dialogue.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance expressed cautious optimism in Rome, indicating that there is still hope for a resolution despite the ongoing conflict.

In addition to peace efforts, the US and Ukraine are moving forward with an economic partnership, including a potential minerals deal, although details remain unclear.

The agreement aims to support Ukraine’s reconstruction post-war while addressing US security concerns and investment interests.
