Tens of thousands of mourners and dozens of world leaders are gathering in St Peter’s Square for the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88.

The funeral mass is scheduled to begin at 10:00 local time (09:00 BST) in front of St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

An air of solemnity hangs over the square as pilgrims, priests, and nuns continue to arrive, some hurrying through the narrow cobbled streets to secure a spot at the open-air service.

Heads of state, royals, and dignitaries from across the globe are in attendance. Among them is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who arrived in Rome on Saturday morning, according to his spokesperson. There had been earlier uncertainty about whether he would be able to attend.

US President Donald Trump is also in Rome for the funeral — marking his first official overseas trip during his second term in office.

The Vatican has released images showing a steadily growing crowd, with flags, flowers, and quiet prayers setting the tone for what is expected to be a historic day of mourning and remembrance.
