US President Donald Trump has said Russia and Ukraine are "very close to a deal" following high-level talks in Moscow between his special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin — talks notably held without Ukrainian participation.

Speaking to reporters in Rome ahead of Pope Francis’ funeral, Trump described the day of negotiations as “productive,” while the Kremlin termed the discussions “constructive.” Trump further stated on social media that most key points had been agreed upon and called for both sides to meet at “very high levels” to finalize the agreement.

Putin’s aide, Yuri Ushakov, noted the three-hour meeting brought US and Russian positions closer, particularly on Ukraine, and raised the possibility of direct dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, insisted that only a “full and unconditional ceasefire” could pave the way for territorial discussions. While dismissing Russia’s control over Crimea, Zelensky acknowledged Ukraine’s current lack of military capability to retake the peninsula, a stance Trump appeared to support.

Media reports suggest the US peace proposal includes recognition of Russia’s control over Crimea and other occupied regions, and the exclusion of Ukraine from NATO—terms reportedly rejected by Kyiv and European allies.

Zelensky criticized Russia’s rejection of a proposed 30-day ceasefire and urged greater international pressure. He also condemned the use of North Korean-made missiles in a deadly attack on Kyiv, allegedly containing US-manufactured components.

As tensions persist, Trump continues to press for a resolution, stating he is "putting a lot of pressure" on both sides to end a war he claims is costing thousands of lives weekly.
