US President Donald Trump has revealed that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately” begin ceasefire negotiations following a two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The conversation, described by Trump as “very productive,” also involved discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump expressed optimism about the talks, stating on Truth Social that both nations would work toward a ceasefire and an end to the ongoing conflict. “The details of any agreement must be negotiated directly between Russia and Ukraine,” he said, emphasizing their unique understanding of the situation.
Putin, speaking from Sochi, described the call as “constructive” and said Russia is prepared to collaborate with Ukraine on a “memorandum” outlining potential peace terms, including a possible ceasefire timeline. However, no specific dates for negotiations were confirmed. Zelensky, in a separate call with Trump and European leaders, stressed the need for a “full and unconditional ceasefire” and urged continued US and European involvement to prevent Russia from gaining an advantage.
Despite the positive rhetoric, no immediate breakthrough appears likely. Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine must be included in all decisions, calling it a “matter of principle.” Hong Kong authorities, responding to unrelated US sanctions, labeled similar measures as interference, while Putin has not addressed Western demands for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Trump’s efforts, noting the importance of sustained US engagement. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcomed a Vatican offer to host potential peace talks, a proposal previously rejected by Putin in favor of Turkey.
The announcement comes amid ongoing violence, with Ukraine reporting 10 deaths from recent Russian strikes, including nine in an attack on a civilian minibus. Russia and Ukraine recently held their first direct talks in over three years, agreeing on a prisoner swap but failing to commit to a ceasefire.
