DHAKA: Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul and Editor of Dainik Jugantor Salma Islam appeared before a Dhaka court on Sunday as defendants in two cases filed against them for publishing news with false information.
They appeared before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Alamgir Kabir Raj.
BNP’s standing committee member Mirza Abbas, also former Minister for Public Works, gave his deposition as a plaintiff in the case.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Amirul Islam said, during the time, another defendant Golam Sarwar, former editor of the national daily was absent.
He also said the court, after hearing, fixed January 29 of 2014 as a date to pass order and deposition date to frame another charge for defamation suit against Babul, Salma Islam and Golam Sarwar.
On November 6 of 2002, on the first page of Dainik Jugantor, two reports were published and on October 30 of 2003, another report was published on the last page of the newspaper.
The defendant, in the charges, claimed that those were motivated and false write-ups against him which demeaned him socially and politically.
On this charge, Mirza Abbas filed the cases with the CMM Court of Dhaka on November 10, 2002 and November 2 of 2003.
