Hartal kills passerby in Netrakona

NETRAKONA:  A passer-by was killed and a child injured after a tree, cutting by hartal supporters to create roadblock, fell on them in Kendua upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, 40 of Ramnagar village of the upazila.

The injured child was admitted to District Sadar Hospital.

Locals said some road blockers were cutting tree in Ramnagar area on Rampur-Boikherhati road at around 6:00am. At one stage, a branch of tree fell on Salam and his son while they were passing the area, leaving him dead on the spot and injured one.

When contacted, Kendua police station officer-in-Charge Mosarraf Hossain told banglanews, “The body was recovered.  We are investigating whether pickets are cutting the tree.”

The 60-hour nonstop countrywide hartal, enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, is underway on Monday amid stray incidents of violence.
