Commuters suffer as Bandarban transport strike underway

Regular commuters and tourists are suffering severely as a 12-hour transport strike has disrupted bus services on different routes in Chattogram, Bandarban, Cox's Bazar district, and other upazilas today (October 18).

The strike, enforced by the 'Chattogram-Southern Region-Cox's Bazar-Bandarban District Road Transport Owner Worker Unity Council', began at 6 am on Wednesday.

The council is observing the strike demanding the cancellation of bus services operating without route permits on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Highway.

The situation has caused suffering among professionals who regularly commute to Chattogram city.

Minhajul Islam, a student of Bandarban Government College, said: "Our lives have become miserable suddenly due to the transportation crisis. We have to travel on CNG-run Easybike, which are charging twice the regular fare, causing us to waste a lot of time and effort."

Besides, due to the transportation strike, all bus tickets for daytime buses have been canceled by the bus authorities.

Rafiqul Islam, an official of Bandarban Shyamoli Bus Counter, said: "Due to the transportation strike, we cannot arrange any buses leaving Bandarban in the morning. Everyone is being provided tickets for night buses.
