Govt to import onion, sugar from India: Minister

The government decided to import 20,000 tonnes of onions and 50,000 tonnes of sugar from neighboring India ahead of the month of Ramadan.

Ahasanul Islam Titu, state minister for commerce, came up with the decision while talking to reporters at his village house in Delduar upazila in Tangail on Friday (January 26).

The prices of all essential items will be brought under control in the country before the month of Ramadan, likely to begin from the second week of March based on moon sighting, he said.

The minister India has suspended the export of goods to Bangladesh for a long period but it will resume the export before Ramadan.

The commerce ministry has already talked to its Indian counterpart to this end, Titu said.

Apart from this, the government is also engaged in hatching efforts to import sugar and other food items from different countries including Brazil, he said.
