Rupganj clash: Bullet-hit Tajel fighting for his life

Tajel Islam, who sustained bullet injuries during attacks led by the ‘Unda Rafiq Gang’ in Rupganj area of Narayanganj on Monday, is currently fighting for his life at a hospital in Dhaka.

Tajel's condition is critical, his father Moktar Hossain told, quoting a doctor. Besides, the condition of five other bullet-injured persons undergoing treatment at different hospitals is also critical.

Although it was a heinous incident that occurred in broad daylight, police did not record a case until Tuesday evening, despite several attempts made by the victims' families.  And thus, the victims now fear further attack.

While talking to the Daily Sun in this regard, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupganj Police Station Dipak Chandra Saha said that they were looking into the matter and police will record a case based on the facts.

On Monday, a group of 50-60 armed individuals led by Rongdhanu Group Chairman Rafiqul Islam, also known as Unda Rafiq, and his brother Mizanur Rahman, known as Kutta Mizan, attacked several houses in Nawra, Kayetpara.

At least 13 villagers, including eight people, sustained bullet injuries during the attack. Villagers said that the cadres of Unda Rafiq stormed into the house of Tajel at noon.

They fired bullets at the house, leaving Tajel with bullet hits. At that time, Abdur Rahman, a member of the gang, hacked his face with a machete.

The local people then rescued him and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital from where to a private hospital for better treatment.

Villager Nur Jahan said that the male members left the area in fear of another attack.

Local Awami League leader Motaleb Bhuyian said that they were attacked even during the regime of the ruling party AL.

He alleged that land grabber Unda Rafiq led the attack.

The leader raised questions over the mysterious role of local administration for which the criminals are not being arrested.

In the meantime, victim Mostafizur Rahman Nirob filed a complaint against 30 people, including Rafiq and his brother, with the police station.

In the allegation, he stated that Unda Rafiq tried to occupy their land.

Failing to take control, he with his cohorts carried out an attack on their house and some others, along with residents.

“The criminals are still planning to attack again. Many people left their houses to protect them from further assault.  Police are to bring any criminal to book,” he said.
