As many as 106 members of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) have taken shelter in Bangladesh along the Tumbru border amid a conflict between the Myanmar military and the armed rebel group Arakan Army in Rakhine State.

Bangladesh Border Guard Public Relations department issued a press release on Monday (Feb 5).

As the armed confrontation persists between Myanmar troops and the Arakan Army, numerous families, including those with young children, have fled the area on foot, carrying minimal supplies. 

Meanwhile, the government has kept the BGB members on a high alert so that no group like Rohingya can infiltrate through the Myanmar border during the conflict going on between the rebel factions in Arakan state and Myanmar's military junta.

While talking to reporters during a press conference in Bandarban this evening, BGB Cox's Bazar Region Commander Brigadier General Morshed Alam, said additional BGB members have been deployed in the border areas to closely monitor the situation.

Besides, Law Minister Anisul Huq told the parliament that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed the armed forces and the BGB to exercise patience regarding the war-like situation in Myanmar.

“Bangladesh is observing the situation closely and steps will be taken in line with the directives of the prime minister,” he informed the House in response to a supplementary question raised by Jatiya Party leader Mujibul Haque Chunnu.
