LPG price reduction depends on int'l market: Nasrul

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today (Feb 25) said the regulatory commission cannot reduce the price of LPG in the local market if the price is not decreased in the international market.

He said in a written reply to a query by the independent member Muhammad Saiful Islam at the parliament in the capital.

He said currently, the government sells LPG per 12.5 kg at Tk 591.

“As our country is dependent on imports of LPG (98% of the total demand), until and unless LPG price in the international market is not reduced, the Regulatory Commission has no scope to reduce the price of private LPG in the local market,” the minister said.

He said, “To make LPG gas more affordable and accessible across the country government is planning larger LPG terminal at Matarbari area of Maheshkhali and bottling plant in Latifpur Mouza of Chattagram.”

Apart from this, policy revision is underway to encourage private entrepreneurs to set up LPG bottling plants. This will ensure adequate supply of LPG to keep the price affordable at the consumer level.
