A teenager died after being hit by an elephant at the National Zoo in the capital's Mirpur.

The incident took place on Thursday (April 11) at 11am.

Director Md Rafiqul Islam Talukdar of the National Zoo confirmed the matter this afternoon.

He said that one of our elephant mahouts Azad Ali entered the elephant enclosure at 11am with his 17 year old son Zahid. At that time the elephant was being cared for. Suddenly, the elephant was startled by the new person and attacked him abruptly.

He said the elephant is usually under the control and direction of the mahout. And no one else is allowed to enter the enclosure except the mahout.
