Foreign minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud today (May 21) said that the United States had already informed the Bangladesh mission in Washington about imposing the ban on former army Chief Aziz Ahmed.
He made the remark at an event organized at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital.
The United States on Tuesday imposed sanctions on retired army chief Aziz Ahmed over corruption allegations, effectively restricting his entry into the world's most influential country.
Foreign Minister in this regard said the US decision against Aziz Ahmed was not under the visa policy. It was made under Section 7031(c) of the annual Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act.
However, “The government has taken zero tolerance initiatives against any corruption,” said FM.
He said, “Our mission (Washington) was informed about this earlier. It is an army matter. I don't want to say anything more at this moment. However, we are involved with the United States on many issues.”
The foreign minister further said that US diplomat Donald Lu visited Dhaka. “We had a positive discussion with him. We both the nations want to carry bilateral relationship to the highest level.”
