8.4 million People at risk due to cyclone: UNICEF

More than 8.4 million people including 3.2 million children are at risk of health, nutrition, sanitation and insecurity due to cyclone Remal which smashed into Bangladesh’s low-lying area, said United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh made the statement in a press briefing on Monday (May 27).

In the statement Sheldon said, “According to information that we received states that Bhola, Patuakhali and Bagerhat areas have been worst affected by the cyclone.”

“Many upazilas of the affected areas have been flooded. In this critical condition, our only effort is to reach the children and their families affected by the storm,” said Sheldon UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh.

He said from the beginning UNICEF is closely working with the government. UNICEF is stocked various items including water purification tablets, jerry cans, mobile toilets, hygiene and family kits in 35 warehouses across the country.
