Sewing machine, a big support for Morsheda

A sewing machine has become a big support for widow Morsheda Khatun and her family to survive and overcome her financial hardship.

Morsheda Khatun, a resident of Bhattigram of Hatia union of Ulipur upazila in Kurigram, has expressed gratitude to Bashundhara Shuvosangho for the sewing training programme.

“I get orders to make frocks, salwars, kameezes, toddler pants, round shirts and tapestries. If you make them in the village, you can earn from Tk60 to Tk200 for each item. Now, I can earn to manage house expenses and the daughter’s educational expenses,” she said.

Morsheda’s husband died after 10 years of marriage while the widow has somehow been passing her days with one daughter often starving.

“I used to sew before. I cannot work much because I do not have a machine. There is a lot of demand for manual labour in the village. Not everyone can go to work in tailors,” she said.

“There are many girls who are too shy to go to tailors and now I will install this sewing machine at home. “Most village women will come to me to make dresses. I think I will get extra income,” she added.
