DHAKA: At least eight shanties were gutted as a devastating fire broke out at slum in Hazaribagh area of the capital early Tuesday.

Fire service headquarters’ telephone operator Jibon Mian told banglanews the fire originated from a cigarette butt at a shanty in the area around 4:25am and soon engulfed adjacent shanties.

On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the fire after 45-minute of frantic efforts with the help of locals.

The extent of loss from the fire could go up to Tk 50,000.
