Garment workers staged a protest on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Gazipur today (March 13) demanding their salaries and Eid bonuses.
The demonstration took place around 11 am in the Baimile area under Konabari police station, as workers from Swadhin Garments Factory took to the streets, pressing for their dues.
According to police and local sources, employees of the factory, located in the Zarun area of Konabari, initially gathered in front of the factory before moving onto the highway near the Konabari flyover.
The blockade caused severe traffic congestion, disrupting vehicular movement and creating hardship for commuters.
Upon receiving the news, law enforcement intervened, clearing the road and restoring traffic flow after nearly half an hour of disruption.
Md. Nazrul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Konabari Police Station, said that the workers were scheduled to receive their salaries and Eid bonuses on March 20.
However, they began protesting ahead of the date, demanding immediate payment, he said, adding that the situation was brought under control, and vehicular movement resumed shortly after.
