Tangail hartal underway amid violence

TANGAIL: The dawn-to-dusk shutdown, called by district BNP, is underway in the district on Wednesday amid stray incidents of violence.

The party is marking the hartal protesting the arrest of former president of Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal Sultan Salahuddin Tuku.

From a pro-hartal procession in Gopalpur upazila, pickets assaulted upazila unit Juba League leader Jalal Uddin and Chhatra League leader Nazrul Islam with sharp weapons.

Critically injured Jalal and Nazrul were rushed to Goplapur health complex and then referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.

Gopalpur Thana Officer-in-Charge Jasim Uddin Sarker confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Meanwhile, all types of shops remained closed and vehicular movements were stopped during the shutdown.

Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam told banglanews that extra police forces were deployed in the important areas of the district to avert any untoward situation.
