Extradition treaty made effective

DHAKA: Bangladesh and India exchanged the ratified instruments of the extradition treaty signed between the two neighboring countries to facilitate exchange of convicts and wanted criminals.

Senior secretary for the Home Ministry, CQK Mustaq Ahmed and Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saran signed the extradition deal on-behalf of two governments of neighboring countries at the home ministry on Wednesday.

As per the agreement, legal authority of a country could extradite convicted person to another country after one year of punishment.

On January 28, two agreements—the extradition agreement and a revised travel agreement--were singed between Bangladesh and India.

Home Minister MK Alamgir and Indian Home Affairs Minister Sushil Kumar Sambhaji Rao Shinde signed the deals on behalf their respective side.

The extradition treaty will facilitate the way for deportation of jailed ULFA ‘general secretary’ Anup Chetia.

Similarly, it will also help Dhaka in getting back its criminals who are currently lodged in Indian jails.
