Violence kills 5 in Cox’s Bazar

COX’S BAZAR: At least five people were killed and scores others injured in a fierce clash between police and BNP-Jamaat activists at Kutubdia upazila under the district on Tuesday evening.

The deceased were identified as Jamaat activist Abu Ahmed, 55, Shibir man Azizur Rahman, 20, Tajul Islam, 27, Parvez, 24.

However, another deceased couldn’t be identified immediately.

Cox’s Bazar-2 constituency lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad and district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shahjahan confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Witness said the violence triggered after Magrib prayer as BNP-Jamaat activists swooped into the police van-motorbike and started vandalism also hooked on duty policemen.

On information, Kutubdia Upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO) Officer¬-in-Charge rushed to the place.

The agitating BNP-Jamaat men also confined them.

Later, additional police force rushed to the spot and rescued officers after an hour long effort at around 7.30pm.

Cox’s Bazar District Commissioner Ruhul Amin confirmed the matter to banglanews. He, however, claimed that two people were killed in the clash.
