BRAHMANBARIA: Two people were killed and 30 others injured as a compartment of train derailed at Akhaura in the district early Thursday that halted rail link of Chittagong with other parts of the country.
The deceased were identified as Nurul Amin, 45 of Mymensingh and Mustakin, 25 of Netrokona.
The cause of the accident could not be known immediately.
Sources said that a compartment of Chittagong Mail derailed at around 3:15am, leaving two dead on the spot and snapped rail communication on Dhaka-Chittagong, Dhaka-Sylhet and Sylhet-Chittagong routes.
Confirming the matter Akhaura Thana Officer-in-Charge Saidul Islam told banglanews, “At least 20/25 people were injured in the incident and we are trying to rescue them.”
Akhaura Railway Hospital Pharmacist Kamruzzaman said that 35 people were given first aid and critically injured 19 were sent to Upazila health complex.
Fire Service Station In charge Akkas Mia told banglanews, “The train services remained stopped on Dhaka-Chittagong, Dhaka-Sylhet and Chittagong-Sylhet routes for around 5-hour.”
Later, the trail link restored at around 8:50am after rescue train cleared the line by removing the derailed compartment.
