DHAKA: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday opined that Jamaat-e-Islami is doing democratic politics.

“Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has their political ideology and principles. The party is doing politics democratically,” he said.

The spokesperson for the party came up with the observation while addressing an extended meeting of Khelafat Majlish at the National Press Club in the afternoon.

Citing a news item from a paper, he said, police arrested 21 Jamaat leaders and activists in Chittagong while holding a meeting at their political office on Monday.

He added: “Such an incident cannot take place in a democratic country.”

Mirza Fakhrul also defended Khaleda Zia’s demand to disband elite force RAB as its members have become involved in kidnapping and killing.

Kalyan Party chairman Syed Ibrahim Birpratik and Khelafat Majlish Ameer Principal M Ishaque Ali also spoke.
