DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the bail given by the High Court to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in a case filed under Special Powers Act, over arson attack in Cumilla.
Besides, the court has ordered to dispose the matter of acceptability of Khaleda Zia’s appeal filed with the High Court, by seven days.
On Tuesday (June 26), a three-member appellate division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order, directing to dissolve the leave-to-appeal filed by the state against a High-court order that granted bail to Khaleda Zia.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state while Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, AJ Mohammad Ali and Joynul Abedin moved for Khaleda Zia.
Earlier on May 28, the High Court granted bail for six months to BNP chief Khaleda Zia in two cases filed in Cumilla.
Later, the government filed a petition with the Supreme Court Appellate Division seeking a stay on the bail order.
During the BNP-led alliance's movement on February 3 in 2015, eight people were killed and 20 others injured as miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a bus at Jogmohanpur in Chouddagram of Cumilla.
Two cases were filed against Khaleda following the incident.
