Hearing on Khaleda’s appeals in Orphanage case deferred

DHAKA: The High Court on Tuesday (July 3) differed till July 8 the hearing on the appeals filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and the Anti-Corruption Commission against her in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order following an application filed by Khaleda seeking adjournment of the hearing.

In the application, Khaleda stated that she had earlier submitted a petition to the Supreme Court seeking review of its May 16 order that asked the HC to hear and dispose of her appeal in case by July 31. The review petition is pending with the SC.

Lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali moved for Khaleda while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan stood for Anti-Corruption Commission and attorney general Mahbubey Alam moved for the state during the hearing in the court.

Earlier on July 1, the High Court fixed July 3 for hearing on the appeal petition filed by Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust case.

On February 8, a Dhaka court sentenced Khaleda to five years of rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
