DHAKA: BNP vice chairman advocate Khandakar Mahbub Hossain said without national unity, it will not be possible for BNP alone to realize a neutral election.
He made the remarks in a protest meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Friday noon (July 6).
Nagorik Adhikar Andolon Forum organized the meeting demanding government to stop tricks against BNP chairperson Khaleda’s release and treatment.
Mahbub Hossain said, “National unity is a must in the current transition period of the country where democracy and human rights are being terminated. I hope all the national leaders of Bangladesh will respond to the call of BNP for unity. If national unity can be formed, the government will not last. Without national accord, I don’t think BNP alone can force the government to ensure neutral polls.”
The first and foremost thing we have to do is ensure people’s right to vote. We have to take to the streets to realize our demands, he said.
“I think that the Prime Minister is riding on the back of a tiger and can not get off. We don’t know the ending of it but at one point it will end by the power of BNP, 20-party alliance and countrymen. The government sees BNP as their biggest threat and that is only reason party chairperson Khaleda Zia is locked up in an abandoned prison”, he added.
The senior BNP leader urged everyone concerned to unite and come forward to release Khaleda Zia from jail as there is no way she will be freed through legal procedures.
