Govt on right track to solve quota issue: Quader

DHAKA: Urging quota protesters to have patience, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said the quota committee is collecting information and data from country and abroad to reach a final decision.

Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, made the remarks to reporters after meeting US ambassador Marcia Bernicat at Bridge office in Dhaka on Saturday (July 14).

The US embassy in Dhaka recently issued a statement on the arrest of quota movement leaders and organizers.

When asked about it, Quader said, “I don’t know why they are speaking on this matter. I want to say that the government is completely on the right track in resolving the problem. A formal committee has been formed led by cabinet secretary. The committee is collecting necessary information and making progress in this matter.”

Earlier on July 2, the government formed a 7-member committee, led by cabinet secretary, to submit a report on review, reform or revoke the quota system in public service recruitment with 15 working days. On July 8, the committee held its first meeting.

Quader also asked the quota reformists to have patience in the process and have faith on the steps taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On the issue of arresting quota reformists, he said law enforcing agencies are only arresting those who were involved in the attack on DU VC’s residence.
