DHAKA: After Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Road Transport & Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader now returned the BMW car which was given by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as gift.
Bridges ministry’s Senior Information Officer Md Abu Naser issued a notice regarding this Wednesday (July 18).
On Tuesday (July 17), a letter was sent to the government transport department asking to take back the BMW and give the earlier car used by the minister back, said the notice.
Sources said that the premier gifted BMWs to several senior ministers for their contribution as leaders of Awami League and members of the cabinet, over long period.
The posh vehicles were assembled during the Foreign Ministerial Level Meeting of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, and later kept unused.
Government bought the cars with a cost of Tk 70-80 lakh for each.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Housing & Public Works Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Law Minister Anisul Haque, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader were, among others, given the BMWs.
Of them, Matia Chowdhury earlier returned the vehicle gifted to her, said sources.
