DHAKA:  The Supreme Court fixed August 12 for passing an order on a petition filed by the state seeking a stay on the High Court order that granted bail to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in a Cumilla arson case filed under the Special Powers Act.

A 4-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain fixed the date after hearing on the petition on Thursday (August 9).

A HC bench of Justice A K M Assaduzzaman and Justice SM Mujibur Rahman granted 6 months’ bail to Khaleda Zia on Monday (August 6).

Khandaker Mahbub Hossain pleaded for bail while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state.

The case was filed in connection with vandalizing vehicles in Chouddagram upazila of Cumilla on February 3, 2015.

However, on February 8, a Dhaka court sentenced five years’ imprisonment to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia orphanage Trust graft case. She was sent to Dhaka central jail following the verdict.
