DHAKA: BNP senior leaders including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir weren’t permitted to meet their convicted party chief Khaleda Zia at jail on Eid Day.
They went to meet Khaleda Zia at the Old Central Jail at Nazim Uddin Road, at noon.
Police reportedly obstructed them when the leaders reached Makkushah Mazar Intersection around 12:30pm Wednesday (August 22).
Mirza Fakhrul showed police the copy of a letter which was sent to the home ministry.
Police officials said they aren’t acknowledged about any meet with the BNP chief.
Mirza Fakhrul, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Mirza Abbas condemned the matter of not being allowed to meet Khaleda Zia.
BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, Vice Chairman Abul Awal Mintoo, Khaleda Zia’s Advisers Amanullah Aman, Habibur Rahman Habib, Executive member Tabith Awal, Bilkis Jahan Shirin, Shirin Sultana, Shahrin Islam Shayla, Khairunnahar, Shairul Kabir Khan and Shamsuddin Didar were also among the over two hundred leaders and activists were there.
They also chanted slogans demanding release of Khaleda Zia.
However, a Dhaka court sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years of rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8.
