DHAKA: Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (BSCBA) said the remarks Law Minister made to reporters against Pro-BNP lawyers following their meeting with the Chief Justice is ‘very sad and painful.’

BSCBA made the assertion at a press briefing on Tuesday (Sep 11).

Earlier on Sunday (Sep 9), some Pro-BNP lawyers met with Chief Justice to raise objection to shifting court in old central jail to conduct trial of Zia Charitable Trust graft case against jailed BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. Following that meeting lawyers said, “Law Ministry can not issue gazette on shifting of court in jail without consultation with Supreme Court.”

On the other hand, Law Minister Anisul Huq also made a courtesy call with the CJ later in the same day. After the meeting, when asked about the Pro-BNP lawyers’ remarks, the minister told reporters, “If they said such thing then, I think they don’t know law.”   

The SCBA called the press briefing today to respond on Law Minister’s remarks. 

In a written statement, Bar Association President Joynul Abedin said, “He (Anisul) is a lawyer, Law Minister and a responsible person. People do not expect such remarks from him. We think his remarks are insulting to all lawyers of the country. We hope that he will retract such statements and be respectful to lawyers.”
