Australia Leads Ashes 2-1

Ashes is the traditional rivalry between two formidable old foes of the cricket fraternity. Nothing tastes to the Englishmen or the Australians than winning Ashes series in the opponent’s backyard.

Australia the current holder of Ashes after winning the first two matches of the current series at Lords and Edgbaston after exciting finishes were looking set for wrapping up the series with third consecutive win at Headingly. But England inspired by their charismatic captain flamboyant Ben Stokes and major contributions from Mark Wood and Chris Woakes turned the table on the Aussies winning by three wickets. England stays very much alive in the series raising the possibility of a major turnaround. The last two tests of the two evenly matched teams, are set for mouthwatering contests.

Australia is the current ICC Test Champion. They also hold the prestigious Ashes.  Winning the first two keenly contested tests of the current Ashes series they looked like wrapping up the Ashes winning the third test. England brought some major changes bringing in fast bowler Mark Wood and seaming all rounder Chris Woakes. Australia replaced injured Cameroon Green with Mitchell Marsh. Wood (5/34) bowling fast and on current length and Woakes (3/73) moving the ball restricted Australia to 263 in the first innings. Marsh returning after a while rescued his team from total collapse scoring a brilliant counter attacking 118.
England was also reduced to 7/142 by brilliant Australian Captain Pat Cummins bowling fast and accurate. However, Ben Stokes rising to the occasion again played his wonderful brand of aggressive batting took England within 26 runs of Australian score. This changed the complexion of the match completely restoring confidence in the English camp.

Australian second innings almost followed the same trail. English bowlers bowled with a plan never allowing Australians playing with any freedom. However, the best performing Australian batsmen of the series Travis Head (77) and Usman Khwaja (43) applying themselves ensured that Australia had some resources to stretch England setting them a target of 250. This time Harry Brooks (75) and Jack Crawley (44) resisting the surge of Mitchel Starc ( 5/78) ensured that England could get across the finishing tape winning by 3 wickets. With this English win the series now stays at 2-1 in favor of Australia. England got a lifeline. The last two tests of the series open avenues for England recovering the Ashes or Australia consolidating the lead stretch its dominance.
