Bangladesh beat Afghanistan to keep Asia Cup hopes alive

Bangladesh stayed in contention for the Super Four of the Asia Cup 2025 with a thrilling eight-run win over Afghanistan in their Group B match in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

Batting first, Bangladesh posted 154-5, led by Tanzid Hasan’s 52 off 31 balls. Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad picked up two wickets each for Afghanistan.

In reply, Afghanistan fell short at 145 despite fighting knocks from Rahmanullah Gurbaz (35), Azmatullah Omarzai (30), and skipper Rashid Khan (20 off 11). Bangladesh’s bowlers kept their nerve, with Mustafizur Rahman (3-28), Nasum Ahmed (2-11), and Taskin Ahmed (2-34) striking at crucial stages.

Late sixes from Noor Ahmad created brief tension, but once Rashid fell, Afghanistan’s hopes faded.

The result leaves Sri Lanka on top of Group B with four points, while Bangladesh also finish with four. Afghanistan, with one match left against Sri Lanka on Thursday, must win to stay alive.

Bangladesh’s fate now depends on Sri Lanka’s performance. A Sri Lanka victory would secure Bangladesh’s place in the Super Four, while an Afghan win could bring net run rate into play.
