Sheikh Jamal DC observes Nat’l Mourning Day

Bangladesh Premier League outfit Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd observed the National Mourning Day on Tuesday, commemorating the 48th anniversary of the martyrdom of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The club is named after Sheikh Jamal – the second son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, and younger brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

At the fateful dawn of August 15 in 1975, a group of disgruntled army officers assassinated the country’s undaunted leader Bangabandhu and most of his family members.

Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel, Sultana Kamal and Rosy Jamal, brother Sheikh Naser, Abdur Rab Serniabat, Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni, Arzu Moni, Baby Serniabat, Sukanta Babu, Arif and Abdul Nayeem Khan Rintu were killed along with Bangabandhu.

The assassination is described as the ugliest chapter of the nation's history. Bangabandhu’s two daughters, Sheikh Hasina, who is now prime minister, and Sheikh Rehana escaped the planned assassination as they were abroad.

Bashundhara Group Vice-Chairman and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Chairman Safwan Sobhan Tasvir took initiatives to observe this day through daylong programmes.

In the morning, the club arranged Quran Khwani and dua mahfil seeking eternal peace for the departed souls of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of the August 15 carnage at their premises.

Sheikh Jamal DC members, officials and players paid homage by placing floral wreaths at the shrines of martyrs at Banani graveyard and paid glowing tributes to the Father of the Nation by placing a wreath at his portrait in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital.

Then they also paid tribute to Lt Sheikh Jamal by placing a wreath at his portrait and distributed food among poor, needy and orphans at the club premises.

Sheikh Jamal’s founding president Manjur Kader Chowdhury, executive director Nazib Ahmed, director Zahir Ahmed Chowdhury Swapon, secretary Mehgerab Alam Chowdhury, members, officials and players were present on the occasion.
