Two hot favorites for the ICC World Cup 2023 weeks before the event locked horns in India for a very useful three matches ODI series with a view to working out their best combination.
India rested their top guns for the first two matches leaving Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav. Yet they won big by 5 wickets at Mohali and 99 runs on DLS method at Indore. A comprehensive series whitewash was looming as all big guns of India returned for the final match at Rajkot on 27 September. Australia included Glen Maxwell and Mitchell Starc for the first time in the series. From back to the wall Kangaroos brilliantly bounced back and redeeming with 66 runs win salvaged pride. India won the series 2-1.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat. On an easy paced wicket Australia launched planned assault on Indian bowlers. Bumrah and Seraj were taken for plenty as Warner and Marsh raced to 78 in the 8.1 overs before flamboyant Warner completing his third fifty of the series miscued a short ball of Prasidh Krishna after scoring 56 in 34 deliveries. Marsh (96 in 84 balls) went on merry with Steve Smith (74 in 61 balls) as the 2nd wicket partnership keeping the momentum going added precious 137 runs. Australians kept the tempo going through out innings and on the very hot and humid day raced upto 352/7 in the allotted overs. India X-Factors Jasprit Bumrah conceded 80 runs for his 3 wickets and Kuldeep Yadav who was carefully exposed for only 6 overs conceded 48 for his 2 wickets.
After doing all the running chasing 353 for a series clean sweep against strong Australian bowling and sharp fielding appeared not easing even for the Indians. Even then Rohit Sharma (81), Virat Kohli (56), Shreyas Iyer (48), Ravindra Jadeja (35), KL Rahul (26) got start. But none could convert their innings to a match winning contribution. Glen Maxwell playing for the first time of the series picked the wickets of top four giving away 40 runs in his allotted overs. Indian Innings eventually folded at 286. Australia won huge and handsome by 66 runs. For winning the first two matches India won the series 2-1. Maxwell was adjudged player of the match. Shubman Gill for his exceptional batting performance was adjudged player of the series. A very useful series played with great intensity and intent was successfully completed. It will let both the teams working out their right combinations and iron their limitations.
