Lionel Messi continues to redefine excellence in Major League Soccer, making history once again by becoming the first player to score multiple goals in four consecutive league matches.

The Argentine icon added another chapter to his glittering legacy with a brace in Inter Miami’s resounding 4-1 victory over New England Revolution on July 9 at Gillette Stadium.

Messi first sparked this remarkable streak in late May, netting twice against CF Montréal and then repeating the feat in a dominant display over Columbus Crew.

After a brief detour to compete in the Club World Cup—where Miami bowed out in the round of 16 to Paris Saint-Germain and Messi scored once in four appearances—he returned to MLS action with the same fire and precision.

Against New England, Messi showcased his trademark magic. In the 27th minute, he capitalized on a defensive error, slotting home a left-footed strike from the center of the box.

Just 11 minutes later, he latched onto a pinpoint through ball from long-time teammate Sergio Busquets, curling in another sublime finish beyond the reach of goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic.

Busquets and Messi’s chemistry—refined over years at Barcelona—was on full display. “They just read each other effortlessly,” said Miami coach Javier Mascherano. “Busquets knows exactly where Messi wants the ball. That’s gold for us.”

Veteran shot-stopper Oscar Ustari also played a key role, registering six crucial saves before Carles Gil pulled one back for New England in the 79th minute. Tadeo Allende’s misstep led to Gil’s long-range strike, but the damage had already been done.

With the win, Miami leapfrogged into fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 35 points—just seven behind leaders FC Cincinnati, despite playing three fewer matches.

Messi now boasts 14 goals from 15 MLS outings, trailing top scorer Sam Surridge by only two goals, though Surridge has played six more games.

As Miami gears up for a hectic July schedule, Mascherano admits finding moments to rest Messi is a growing challenge. “We know we have to, but when he plays like this—he’s simply irreplaceable.”
