Kylian Mbappe struck twice as Real Madrid maintained their flawless start to the La Liga season with a convincing victory over Oviedo.

Mbappe, who had netted the winner against Osasuna in the opening fixture, extended his tally to three goals in two matches. He opened the scoring eight minutes before the break with a precise finish from the edge of the box, before calmly side-footing home his second late in the game.

England’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, who started in the previous match, was named among the substitutes as manager Xabi Alonso opted for Dani Carvajal at right back. Alexander-Arnold was introduced in the closing stages, featuring for the final three minutes with Madrid already two goals ahead.

Vinicius Jr, also starting on the bench, sealed the result in stoppage time with a sharp strike. Alonso handed 18-year-old Franco Mastantuono a place in the attack, and the teenager impressed with his lively performance.

Oviedo’s closest chance came in the 81st minute when Kwasi Sibo’s long-range effort clipped the outside of the post, moments before Mbappe struck his second to secure the win.

The result leaves Madrid level on six points with rivals Barcelona and Villarreal after the opening two rounds of the campaign.
