DHAKA: Former Sri Lanka batsman Chandika Hathurusingha has left his position as assistant coach for New South Wales in favour of coaching Bangladesh. 

This will be his first time as head coach for an international side.

Hathurusingha has had experience at the helm of both New South Wales, in the latter half of the 2012-13 season, and Sydney Thunder. 

New South Wales won the Sheffield Shield in March, their first domestic title since 2008. They reached the final of the Ryobi Cup as well, but lost to Queensland. However, their performance remained lacklustre in the Big Bash League.

New South Wales CEO Andrew Jones praised Hathurusingha's contribution. "Obviously, we are sorry to lose someone of Chandika's ability, but it is a great opportunity for him and a great recognition of his skills and personal qualities. He has done an outstanding job with both the NSW Blues and the Thunder, and I am delighted that his ability will be given an opportunity on a global stage."
