Neymar rescues Brazil in Copa America opener

DHAKA: Brazil's Neymar challenges Peru's Carlos Ascues during their first round Copa America 2015 soccer match at Estadio Municipal Bicentenario German Becker in Temuco, Chile, on Sunday.

With big-name countries falling left and right over the first two days of Copa America, Neymar stood tall and made sure it didn’t happen to Brazil, reports yahoosports.

Neymar scored early and set up the winning goal in stoppage time as Brazil escaped Peru 2-1 on Sunday in Temuco, Chile, and rose to the top of Group C, where it shares the lead with Venezuela after the opening round of matches.

Venezuela stunned continental power Colombia earlier on Sunday, while tournament favorites Argentina couldn’t hold a two-goal lead against Paraguay on Saturday and wound up with a draw.

Peru was gunning for a similar upset on Sunday, and an early gift from Brazil made it a real possibility. Running toward his own net, David Luiz tapped an ill-advised pass to goalkeeper Jefferson, whose lazy clearance toward Dani Alves was intercepted by Christian Cuevas.

Neymar’s header settled Brazil back down, but maybe too much. The Seleção couldn’t capitalize on any of their chances, while Peru offered plenty going forward to scare them.

With a draw looking the most likely outcome, Neymar drove toward the net one last time down the left flank. After pulling back and taking two touches to the inside, he played Douglas Costa through the opposite side of the box with a picture-perfect pass:
