DHAKA: Mustafizur Rahman’s career-best figures of six for 43 in the 2nd ODI match led Bangladesh a maiden series victory over India on Sunday in Mirpur.
After restricting India to an easy 200 all out, the hosts returned with Sakib Al Hasan, who had scored 52 in his team's victory in the series opening game on June 18, led their successful chase with 9 overs to spare.
This latest triumph for the Tigers over India is only their fifth ever that also cemented their place in the 2017 Champions Trophy.
Dhawal Kulkarni removed opener Tamin Iqbal in the seventh over but that brought in Liton Das (36).
The newly stumper-batsman played perfectly with Soumya Sarkar as they made a 52-run stand in second wicket to build solid ground for the Tigers.
Wicketkeeper-cum-batsman Musfiqur Rahman (31) made a 54-run partnership with Shakib in the fourth wicket to take Bangladesh closer to their target.
Shakib pulled out Axar Patel for a boundary to bring up his thirty ODI fifty and remained unbeaten after a 51 off 62 balls including six boundaries.
Shakib and Sabbir Rahman together built the wining 48-run stand in the fifth wickets.
Sabbir (22) took the winning run as Bangladesh reached their target with six wickets and 54 balls to spare to spark scenes of wild elation at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in city’s Mirpur.
Mustafizur finished with 6 for 43 after India won the toss and scored 200 all out off 45 overs with Shikhar Dhawan contributing a timely 53 and MS Dhoni scoring 47. Suresh Raina contributed 34.
India played with three changes after they went down by 79 runs on June 18, its first ODI defeat by Bangladesh since 2007, and once more it dissatisfied its fans.
India captain MS Dhoni’s decision to bat first backfired with the tourists losing opener Rohit Sharma for a duck, who scored 63 in the previous match.
Bangladesh made late inroads to restrict the opponent in an easy target.
Mustafizur, who claimed five for 50 in Bangladesh's 79-run win, picked up six for 43 on Sunday. Nasir Hossain and Rubel Hossai also took two wickets apiece.
Mustafizur set a new record of taking 11 wickets in his first two consecutive One Day Internationals (ODI) matches on Sunday.
The 19-year-old seamer also became the second bowler to take five-fors in his first two ODIs after Brian Vitori of Zimbabwea.
Both teams, however, will meet at same ground for the third and final match on Tuesday.
