DHAKA: A teenager died in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after he had been hit by a ball while umpiring a cricket match, police said Saturday (October 7).
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 17.
He was taken to DMCH where physicians announced him dead on Friday (October 6).
A group of youths were playing cricket in the Balur Math field in Dhaka where the boy was umpiring.
He collapsed on the field after a ball hit him in the chest, said a police source.
The deceased was from a very poor family.
His father is a rickshaw-puller and mother works as a housemaid. He was buried later, added the police source.
The incident, however, comes three years after the tragic death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes in similar circumstances.
Hughes, who played 26 Tests, died from bleeding on the brain in November 2014 after being hit on the base of the skull by a ball during a domestic match in Sydney.
