DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) Thursday upheld the High Court order that declared illegal the use of national anthem tune as ring tone or welcome tune in mobile phones.

Three-member bench of appellate division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order after hearing the plea filed by Robi Axiata Ltd, one of the leading mobile phone operators in the country.

The apex court also asked the mobile operator to give Tk 30 lakh to Mahokhali Cancer Hospital for using national anthem as a business.

Earlier on May 11, the SC upheld High Court order rejecting appeals filed by two other mobile phone operators Grameen Phone and Banglalink.

Later, Robi filed a petition with the appellate division chicaning the HC order.
