DHAKA: The trial run for biometric registration of mobile phone SIM cards has started on Sunday (November 15).

State minister for posts and telecommunications Tarana Halim started the biometric SIM registration this noon.

Earlier on October 21, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ICT affairs adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy inaugurated the trial run of biometric registrations for SIM of cell phones.

He opened the pilot project through buying a SIM and giving his fingerprint on the biometric device at secretariat in city on the day.

The final biometric registration of SIM will begin from December 16 and will continue till April next year.

The initiatives to verify and preregistration mobile SIM cards have been taken to prevent the criminals who allegedly use many SIMs registered under fake names or unregistered.

However, six mobile phone companies, including the state-run operator Teletalk, are operating in the country.
