City bank returns swindled money

DHAKA: City Bank Limited finally returned the swindled money of a depositor following a report published in banglanews on March 16.

Banglanews published a report titled ‘Tk 16 lakhs of City Bank’s depositor disappeared’ based on the allegation made by a customer of the bank’s Jessore branch to Bangladesh Bank (BB).

Sources said, asked by BB, the bank returned Tk 8-lakh out of 16.3 lakhs in the first installment on March 26.

The bank’s headquarters informed the central bank on the matter through a letter.

Concerned higher official of BB told banglanews, “City Bank’s head officer, by a letter, informed us that Tk 8-lakh out of 16.3 lakhs has been returned in the first installment.”

“And the bank has sought time till April 3 to give the rest of the money back,” he added.

Sources said expatriate Asaduzzaman deposited a total of Tk 16.3 lakhs at bank’s Jessore branch, but the bank officials began deceiving him.

Later he informed the bank’s head office but got no result and then came to the central bank’s door. Following the allegation, BB asked the concerned to give back the money by March 25.

Earlier on March 17, admitting the money defrauding to banglanews, Nasim Ahmed, head of customer compliant cell at City Bank’s head office, said “Asaduzzam submitted the allegation in black on November 12, 2013.”
